Protecting a Historic Building During Restoration

The restoration of Grey Gables required a large temporary roof structure to provide complete weather protection throughout the construction programme. Given the building's listed status, careful consideration had to be given to every aspect of the scaffold design to ensure the historic fabric of the property remained protected.

Unlike conventional scaffold installations, the temporary roof design was engineered to be completely independent of the building. This meant no scaffold ties could be installed into the structure, eliminating the risk of damage to the historic building while still providing a stable and secure access solution.

Complex Engineering and Specialist Design

Delivering a large temporary roof without relying on building ties presented a significant engineering challenge.

Working closely with our designers and Redridge, we implemented a bespoke scaffold and temporary roofing system designed specifically for the project. The structure required detailed planning, specialist calculations and precise installation to ensure stability while accommodating the unique layout and architectural features of the property.

The result was a robust, fully engineered temporary roof system that protected the building throughout the restoration works while maintaining the highest standards of safety and compliance.
